In the deep roots of Texas football history, few known figures from the historic program stick out larger and more notable than Darrell K Royal. He served as the head coach for the Longhorns from 1957 to 1976. Royal created a legacy that would difficult for others after to him to mathch. During his time as head coach for the Texas Longhorns, he reached the pinnacle of college football three times. He secured national championships in 1963, 1969, and 1970 for the Longhorns. He also extended his coach abilities beyond winning, losing, and competing for national titles. He embodied the football spirit by innovating and experimenting with new offensive schemes, including creating what we know now as the wishbone formation. Under his ruling and dominance, the Longhorns went on to become the powerhouse football program we see today. His impact on the program is unmatched and is still present today with the current Texas Longhorns, Darrell K Royal retired from coaching the Texas Longhorns in 1976. Mack Brown entered the Texas Longhorns in 1998 and started his tenure as the head coach for the historic program after John Mackovic. Browns start with the Longhorns initiated a new era of success for the Longhorns after a disappointing several years competing in the collegiate level. He put together a remarkable and truly rememarable turnaround for the Texas program. While holding the reins as head coach for the Longhorns he consistently found himself in the positions of comepting for the coveted Big 12 conference title and national attention. The very top of Browns time with the Texas Longhorns came in 2005. Led by legendary collegiate and NFL quaterback Vince Young, the 2005 Texas Longhorns achieved the title of National Champions in a thrilling victory over the USC Trojans in the Rose Bowl. This significant achievement solidifed Mack Browns legacy as a Longhorn and transformed the program into the modern powerhouse it is right now. After a short hiatus as head coach of the Longhorns, Brown returned to his position with the Texas program in 2013. He once again embarked on a journey of turning the Longhorns into the national contenders they were. His second shot at coaching and turning the Longhorns around showed the nation he was capable of adapting to the evolving landscape of collegiate football. Under Coach Brown, the Longhorns once again became national contenders and a powerhouse not to be taken lightly. His leadership and coach status showed that Brown was a impactful coach to the Texas Longhorns and reaffirmed his legacy in the historic program. Bevo holds a great honor of showing off the universities rich traditions, unmatched strength, and embodies the Longhorn Nation entirely. Bevo started in 1916 when the University of Texas adopted a longhorn steer as their mascot. When deciding the mascot for the University the goals were to find somethingt that symbolized determined nature of the Texas Longhorns. Bevo made his inagural debut in the Thanksgiving Day football game against Texas A&M, and Bevo has been apart of the Texas Longhorns ever since. But Bevo shows more than just what he is, a steer. He symbolizes in a very simple way the spirit of Texas. The longhorn is known for strenght and tenacity. Also its ability to take advantage and power through challengeing conditions, which is what college football is. Bevos presence rallys fans and players to be under the pride of the Longhorns. Bevo has undergone a few interations and with each successor it carries the legacy of the longhorn mascot before them. Currently, Bevo XV, has been the mascot for the Longhorns since his start in 2016. Bevo XV was given a custom made burnt orange and whit horn wrap. One of the most iconic traditions in college football is Bevo doing his pre game ritual of leading the Longhorns onto the field.
