Knitted Viking Hat

This is my second completed knitting project! Following Elizabeth Zimmermans Knitting Workshop video. I made this hat with a circular knitting needle. The second and third bands of color pattern from the bottom are unique designs that I implemented the first is simply a space-holder of vertical bars while the top band consists of a series of Thor's Hammers. This symbolizes the protective aspect of Thor as the traditional enemy of the fources of chaos. (You can see where the circumference of the hat did not allow for a complete pattern and I inserted a narrow upright bar.)

The hat was not supposed to be pointed in this fashion, but I rather like the Viking helmet association that the pointed top provides! The yarn is Red Heart Fiesta Celery acrylic with patterning done in bright green.

The 100% acrylic yarn really doesn't work very well for garments. I find that the ribbing of the band does not have the flex and elasticity that one would desire.

The hat on the right was knitted by my maternal grandmother, Elizabeth (Betty) Corbin. After I completed my Viking hat, my mother gave it to me. I was pleased to take this photograph of the hats beside one another. I wish my grandmother had lived to see me learn to knit. She was a prolific knitter and quilter.
