Objectives / Expected Outcomes

Purpose of the Course.The purpose of this course is to provide students with supervised field experience in counseling in a setting compatible with the student's personal career goals. Each student is expected to arrange for an internship site where he/she will provide counseling services for 12 hours per week (with a minimum of 8 hours client contact per week) under an on-site supervisor's guidance. In addition, each student will participate in weekly group supervision to further develop knowledge and skill in counseling practice. Supervision activities will involve student case presentations, student content presentations, and discussion of outside readings.

Objectives of the Course. A student successfully completing this course will be able to:

describe counselor or consultant characteristics and behaviors that influence helping processes including gender
and ethnic differences, verbal and nonverbal behaviors, personal characteristics, orientations, and skills.
describe client or consultee characteristics and behaviors that influence helping processes including gender and ethnic differences, verbal and nonverbal behaviors, personal characteristics, traits, capabilities, and life circumstances.
discuss factors, other than participants, that influence helping processes including environmental and social factors, relationships external to the helping process, and commitment to change.
discuss helping skills including philosophic and theoretical bases, research, and factors considered in applications.

Text / Readings

Since this is a supervision seminar, there are no assigned texts, however incidental readings may be assigned. There are, however, a variety of materials which will be helpful to you in your progress through this course. These include:

Counseling Field Placement Manual (available in the Division office).
Counselor Licensure Packet (available through DuBois copying service).
Readings packet on sale at DuBois Bookstore.
Other reading assignments will involve use of readings in the university collection.

Course Organization, Class Schedule, Assignments

Organization of the Course: Each student in the course will be expected to arrange for and fulfill a internship experience in counseling within a community agency or school setting (refer to Guidelines, Counseling Internship and complete the Counseling Field Placement Site Description and Counselor Training Supervision Agreement forms).

Assignments. Each student will be expected to prepare and present a thorough case presentation from his or her field placement caseload for discussion and feedback in class (refer to Client Consent Form and Guidelines for Case Presentations). In addition, each student will be expected to prepare a thorough, written, self-evaluation and plan for future growth.

Grading. Evaluation of student progress will be based upon a combination of the following criteria:

Completion of site and supervision documentation (refer to Counseling Field Placement Site Description, and Counseling Field Placement Site Evaluation).
Documentation of completion of required hours of supervised counseling experience (refer to Counseling Field Placement Activity Log. At the end of the term, you must do the necessary calculations to total up the hours of experience you have logged in the various categories of field work.
Evaluation of counseling skill as provided by the student's on-site supervisor (refer to Counseling Field Placement Supervisor's Report).
Quality of in-class participation including discussion of student case presentations, organization of one's own presentation, and discussion of literature review readings as they apply to cases discussed or specific issues in counseling (Note: class attendance is mandatory).

NOTE: Students are expected to receive satisfactory evaluations from their on-site supervisor, to provide recordings of counseling sessions, if requested, to complete paper work on time, and to participate positively and regularly in class to receive a grade of "S". Students who do not complete these requirements will receive an "incomplete" until finished satisfactorily. A failing grade will be reserved for cases involving grossly unsatisfactory, negligent, or unethical behavior at the field placement site, with clients, or in supervision.

Liability / Professional Membership / Registration

Liability: It is required that each student obtain professional liability insurance. Professional liability insurance for counselors may be obtained through a plan endorsed by the American Counseling Association (refer to Membership Application, American Counseling Association, and Brochure, Professional Liability Insurance Program).

Professional Membership: It is also highly recommended that each student in support the efforts by the Ohio Counseling Association by obtaining membership (refer to Membership Application, Ohio Counseling Associaton).

Registration: Students wishing to have their hours of supervised experience count for licensure must register with the Counselor and Social Worker Board. It is the student's responsibility to obtain a copy of the licensing law and Board regulations, to register with the Board, and to provide the Board with all documentation requested.
