Week 1

Winter King Hawthorne



Finest of the hawthornes.
Nice form.
Fruti - orange/red color.
Minimal thorns - good for urban settings and setting with children.
Developed by Bob Simpson in Vincennes, IN.
Consistent fruit, prolific bloomer.

Fosters Holly



Narrow, evergreen foliage.
Separate sexes.
Friendly, not spiney.
Severe winter weather is a concern.
May cause some burnback.
Narrow parameter.
Plant as a single specimen, or pockets of 3.

Deciduous Holly




Shrub, 3-4'.
Plant in pockets of 5-8 for good intensity.
Lots of berries.
Winter hardy.
Nice to work into a garden.

Arborvitae



Scale-like leaf.
Giant Arborvitae
Western Cedar
Found in west part of the country - WA, OR
Works well in midwest as well.
Big grower, 3-6'/year.
Strong branches, central dominant.
The only good arborvitae-the others fall apart.

Arborvitae = "Tree of Life"
Deer proof.

Week 2

Indian Currant

Can leave untouched for a long time.
Heavy
Endures snow, ice.
Deciduous shrub
Drooping branches.
Full sun or part shade.

Fountain Grass
Miscanthus species



Brown with fuzzy at the top.
Growing in popularity.


Kerria



Very green stem.
Neat shrub, ~3' height.
Maintenance Free.
Rose family member.
Yellow blossom in spring, like apple.
Becomes a thicket.
Responds well to rejuvination.
Not bothered by insects.
Very resilient.
Double blossom variety.
Variagated varieties exist.
Variagated forms are typically slower growers because of the shortage of chlorophyll.

Good movement in wind.

Leather Leaf Viburnum


LLV from a distance.


LLV close.

Leathery foliage
Evergreen during winter months.
Will lose foliage annually.
New growth pushes off old, so you really don't see it without foliage.
Remontant - re-blooming.  Blooms in spring and fall.
Re-buds in fall.
Hirsuteness - hairy characteristics, little trichomes.
Responds well to severe pruning.
Thick, good privacy screening.

Good bloomer in the winter.
Wonderful winter color.
Likes cold weather for blooming.
Very short plant.
Plant in a no-mow area.
Without bloom, it serves as a nice ground cover.
Won't get out of bounds.
Bulb or seed.
No particular fragrance.
Deer proof.
Need a bunch of them packed closely to look good.

Cornelian cherry dogwood

Will perform well in very harsh planting conditions (clay, gravel, etc).
Good as a small tree.
Also good as a shrub.
Blooms in early February.
Understory or full sun.
Yellow similar to aconite.
Dependable and packed with bloom.
A must have.
Edible red fruit in May/June.
Very underused plant.
Clean: no insect or diseased foliage.


Witch Hazel

Will bring back when petals out.
Not an outrageous grower.
Not deer proof.
Several colors in witch hazels - yellow, cinnamon, red.
Accent plants.
Vernal types bloom in winter, others bloom in spring.
