FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Migration?

Migration is the cyclic act many animals partake in routinely, typically annually, to move from areas of low resources to areas of high resources. With it brings swathes of many different types of birds, and great opportunities to see birds that live in other areas of the world! For example, in early May, hundreds of millions of songbirds can be seen on their northward migration path. It is a great opportunity to see birds from areas you've never been before!

What should I do if I find a baby bird?

If the bird does not have feathers, it should be returned to the nest. If you cannot find the nest, or the nest is destroyed, make a substitute nest using wicker or a small basket and securing it to the original tree. Observe from a distance. If you do not see the parents visiting the nest, call a local wildlife rehabilitator.

Know the difference between a hatchling and a fledgling! Young birds develop feathers as they grow. Look for full feathers and opened eyes when determining. Fledglings that are found outside the nest are usually mistaken for birds in distress, but they should be left alone. It is normal for birds to be on the ground near the nest when learning to fly. If the bird is injured and needs human intervention, you should contact a local wildlife rehabilitator.

What seed mix should I use in my feeder?

A birdfeeder can be a fun way to attract lots of species to one place for you to watch. Different species prefer different diets, so if you find youself curious about a local backyard bird, why not do some research into what foods they may like! Here is a post by Steve Kress of the Audubon website that has lots of information detailing how to utlilize the right seeds and food to attract the birds you want to see.
