Online Communication Standards
Project Plan
- Fall 2021
- I began to plan a project to replace the outdated Netiquette Rules in my online courses with new DEI-based communication standards. The original Netiquette rules that many online courses use are old and outdated. They came from the early 1970s when the main concern for online communication was conserving resources because of the limited technology available.
- I began to research a plan to develop new standards for my courses. I also wanted to include my students in the development of the new standards. During the fall, I researched online communication in online courses, and I built a lesson around the history of Netiquette and diversity, equity and inclusion for my spring semester courses.
- Spring 2022
- During spring semester, I took my students in all of my classes through the lesson I developed and then we had a week-long discussion about online communication, their feelings, their experiences, and what they would like to see in the new standards. From that discussion, I compiled their answers to help me write the new Online Communication Standards I want to use in my courses.
- Summer 2022
- I presented at the EdMedia + Innovate Learning conference in New York City on Digital Leadership, where I talked in part about this project. You will find the published paper below. I also licensed the Online Communication Standards through Creative Commons. During the summer, I also prepared for a research study on the new communications standards to be conducted during fall semester.
- Fall 2022
- During the fall semester I will be conducting a research study involving the entire student body of the University of Cincinnati, Clermont College. Results and research paper to come after that.
