Model of Classical Nuclear Import (Stewart et al., 2001) 1. The cargo protein is bound by carrier proteins in the cytoplasm. 2. The carrier-cargo complex is transported through the nuclear pore complex into the nucleus. 3. In the nucleus, RanGTP binds and causes the complex to dissociate. 4. The carrier-RanGTP complex is transported through the NPC to the cytoplasm. 5. RanGAP activates RanGTPase activity and the carrier-RanGTP complex dissociates.
