Other Parts of Space

What else is in space?

Stars

a star

Stars are born from clouds of dust and gas.

Like our sun, stars can have planets that orbit them.

There are estimated to be over 100 billion stars in the Milky Way alone.

At the end of it's life, a star will explode into a nebula of gas.

Asteroids

an asteroid

Asteroids are rocky remnants left over from the creation of the solar system.

Most asteroids are found between Mars and Jupiter.

The current asteroid count is 1,308,871.

There is a main asteroid belt that contains many asteroids.

Moons

earth's moon

A moon is defined as a smaller body that orbits a planet.

Currently, there are 290 known moons.

Just like stars, most moons form through gas and dust.

Some moons form elsewhere and are captured in the orbit of planets.
