A Bathing Ape

A Bathing Ape, or Bape for short, is a Japanese streetwear clothing brand founded in 1993 by fashion designer, Nigo. The name comes from the Japanese phrase, "a bathing ape in lukewarm water", which is commonly used to describe youth who lead complacent and sheltered lives. The idea is that if you bathe in lukewarm water, you spend too much time in the bath and you are a lazy and overindulgent person. Nigo uses this as an ironic reference to the main customer base of A Bathing Ape, the younger generation of Japan. The iconic Bape logo is a reference to the 1968 film, Planet of the Apes. Throughout the years, Nigo has released many other projects including Bapesta, Baby Milo, and Bape Kids, as well as numerous collaborations with the likes of Adidas, Puma, Pepsi, Barbie, and G-Shock. Nigo is also the new artistic director of Kenzo as of 2021, and has worked on other fashion brands including Billionare Boys Club with Pharrell Williams and Undercover with Jun Takahashi.
