Pico: The Text Editor
-
When do you use pico, when do you use Notepad?
-
Whenever you want. They do the same thing.
-
Generally, if I am writing from scratch, I will start in Notepad.
Then I will test. If it requires a minor change, a missing semicolon,
for example, I'll change it in pico. If it requires a larger change,
I'll change it in Notepad.
-
But, if you change it in pico, do not forget to download a fresh
copy if you change it in Notepad!
-
You do not have to use pico in class! You may use Notepad
100%. But, I will give a quick demo of pico, because A) it is faster
for quick chanes, and B) some day (trust me), you will be in front of a
Unix telnet session at work, and you will be desperate for a text editor.
-
There are other options available, such as vi and emacs. Choose your
favorite. I like pico the best, it is pretty simple.
-
Response time varies:
-
Near instantaneous on campus.
-
Slower if you are connecting at home, either high speed or dial-up.
