What Is ERIC?
ERIC is an education database which indexes journal articles (EJ numbers) and documents (ED numbers) and can be searched using the OhioLINK version of
ERIC available on the University Libraries' Home Page (www.libraries.uc.edu) under Research Resources, Indexes and Databases.
What Is E* Subscribe?
The University of Cincinnati's subscription to E* Subscribe
provides the full text of about 80% of ERIC documents
(ERIC numbers beginning with ED) listed in
RIE (Resources in Education), 1996+
What Years Are Available Electronically at UC?
ERIC documents published from 1996+, 1995 and earlier
documents if listed in RIE 1996+
documents listed in the RIE, 1996+
What's Not Available Electronically in E* Subscribe?
ERIC journal articles indexed in CIJE (Current Index to Journals in Education) or EJ numbers. These are found in ERIC with links to the full text, Education
Abstracts, and other full text resources.
Three Ways to search E* Subscribe for Full Text (Link to downloading the Adobe Acrobat Reader if not on your computer
(free)):
Express Search
(Requires ED number)
- Go to the E* Subscribe home page (
http://www.edrs.com)
- Select Express Search which is listed under
Search and Order Documents.
- Enter ED number/s in boxes and click on Search.
- To view text click on the Adobe PDF icon.
AE Search (ERIC Clearinghouse for
Assessment and Evaluation's search engine) (http://ericae.net/aesearch.htm)
- Select AE Search which searches only those ERIC documents available electronically.
- AE Search permits simple searches limited to a single statement
- Click on Limited to arrow to select author, title, or author search.
- Click on Obtain from EDRS.
- To view text click on the Adobe PDF icon.
- AE Search works best for simple searches and short
search statements.
For better searches read instructions about the Webscript search engine on the first screen.
Three Ways to Search E* Subscribe for Full Text
AE
Wizard: (ERIC Clearinghouse for Assessment and Evaluation's search engine with the Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors online)

- Go to AskEmily (http://oz.uc.edu/~grimmle) home page and select Full Text sources of Interest to the College of Education.
- Select AE Wizard which searches only those ERIC documents available electronically.
- AE Wizard through the Look up feature permits more sophisticated search than AE Search.
- Permits terms selected to be added to search boxes.
- Search engine prefers:
- "" for exact phrase, e.g. "cooperative learning"=cooperative adj learning
- space for "and", e.g. teamwork achievement=teamwork and achievement
- , for "or", e.g. teamwork, cooperative learning=teamwork or cooperative learning
- Click on Obtain from EDRS.
- To view text click on the Adobe PDF icon.
What to Do If the Full Text of an ERIC Document Isn't Available:
- Check to see if it is one of the 90% of ERIC Documents available on
Microfiche in Langsam Library.
- Search UCLID/OhioLINK.
- Check with Reference Consultation in Langsam.

Can E* Subscribe be
Searched from Off-campus?
Yes, if you have one of the following which identifies you as a UC student,
staff, or faculty member since this is an UC database rather than an OhioLINK
resource:
- Remote Access Account (http://ra.uc.edu/remacc) with
Bearcat Software
- Purchase a CD at the Computer Shop in the UC Bookstore or download the
Bearcat Software from Ucit (http://email.uc.edu)
- If help is needed in installing the remote access software, call
the Ucit Help Desk at 556-3785
- ZoomTown with UC as the Internet Provider +Remote Access Account (http://helpdesk.uc.edu/ra). Available from Cincinnati Bell at special UC rate of
$34.95+connecting charges.
