Henry Chadwick was an British-American sports writer in the mid to late 19th century. He is know as the "Father of Baseball" for his contributions to reporting on and developing the game. Chadwick is credited with creating box scores and the strikeout abbreviation "K"; while not official credited, it is believed that Chadwick also created batting average and earned run average. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1938, 30 years after his death.
Hy Turkin was a sports writer for the New York Daily news and SC Thompson was a musician with a passion for baseball. The two met in 1944 and after years of a shared love of baseball, they collaborated on "The Official Encyclopedia of Baseball" which was published in 1951. This encyclopedia contained complete Major League Baseball rosters and schedules, as well as the previous years honored players, World Series recap, and some player statistics.
