Here's how annoyed squirrels and chipmunks get when a Blue Jay arrives. We have 2 Blue Jay nests in our neighborhood and I often see the adults foraging in the yard. I've never seen them take a mammal but they certainly do inspire remarks from the local rodent population.

When I first moved to the midwest (1984, say) migrant Sandhill Cranes were to be expected by the 2nd or 3rd week of November. More recently I've been surprised to encounter more than a few any time in November and the bulk of the birds I find are later than that. I am looking forward to having them pass through the Cincinnati region if only because of the sounds they make. Here's a short clip of a flock of about 50 Sandhills in a corn field empty of everything else but wind. December 2017.

This is a female spring field cricket and only intended to offer some context. The point of this post is that I really like sitting awake at night listenting to crickets chirp. Here's a recording of one not far from our bed this fall. By season, I conclude it is a fall field cricket.

Began updates to my decades old personal web page to create a document that will serve as a replacement for Face Book, at least for purposes of making announcements and distributing recent work. It is still a bit of a mess as I fuss with fonts and colors etc.

Many links have yet to be established and some that are present are broken.

A microphone attenuator

to record one signal at two different levels. Useful protection against clipping when making a mono recording to a stereo recorder that doesn't control record levels of channels independently.

Bird song

Remarks (observations, sample recordings) on the singing behavior of some of Ohio's common birds.

Tanglewood Lane

Here's Catocala vidua (Widow Underwing) from the yard.
A big moth, I estimated its wingspan to be 8 cm. Hickories (which we have) and Walnuts are reportedly this species' food plants.

Great fun yesterday evening with a pile of folks who like moths. 3 sheets, even more lights, and a small moon.

Here's pics of a few of what I saw; two were new for me.

Some work

NewGarden

is a program to simulate the genetics and dynamics of small populations. The current version is 2.81 from 19 August 2019.

This program is described in the following book and article:

  1. Genetic Diversity in Establishing Plant Populations S. Rogstad and S. Pelikan. (2011)

Here is the CD from the book as a .zip file. Here you have access to the files distributed on the CD included with the book. It includes source code for version 2.1 and an executable version of the program from July 2011.
  2. NEWGARDEN: a computer program to model the population dynamics and genetics of establishing and fragmented plant populations Conservation Genetics Resources (2013) Here is a .zip file containing the parameter files for the 4 different trial conditions (A,B,C,D)

Programs. The executable versions of the NewGarden programs are free to download. They are provided in a single Java archive file (.jar) file. Several recent versions are available.

  1. Version 2.01 27 July 2011 The source is available on the Book CD.
  2. Version 2.2 4 April 2012

The programs available in the archive include

  1. The basic NEWGARDEN Model program that runs the NewGarden simulation specified in a parameter file.
  2. The Validator program that reads a parameter file and reports if it is a valid file in the SimData format.
  3. The DataReader program that reads an entire NEWGARDEN dumpfile and calculates NewGarden's standard summary data.
  4. The FST program that reads a NewGarden dumpfile and calculates F-statistics (FIS, FST, FIT) using collections of user defined subregions.
  5. Documentation and explanation. The file SampleRun.pdf aka Introduction to NewGarden explains how the program works and how you can use it.
  6. Parameter files

Gelstats

is a computer program for making population genetic inferences based on multi-locus probe data. The distribution includes source code, a DOS executable file and a README.

Gelstats version 2.63 is a program to make population genetic inferences from multilocus VNTR gels. It represents some of the recent results of an ongoing project with Steven H. Rogstad from the Biology Department at U.C. You can obtain copies of various parts of the GELSTATS distribution in a variety of formats: The latest version of the readme file is Readme.263 This describes the version Gelstats 2.63 A DOS executable of the GELSTATS program version 2.63. Be sure to get the README me file too! A compressed version of the DOS executable. You'll need GZIP or WinZip or some such program to uncompress it. A Gzip compressed version of the complete source distribution. This program computes estimates of gene frequencies, pairwise similarity, heterozygosity and population differentiation (Fst). It uses nonparametric (permutation) methods to compare values of these variables within and between user defined subgroups of the sample. Additional programs available to manipulate GELSTATS datafiles include

  1. dedup a program that removes identical columns from a GELSTATS data file. source code dedup.cpp
  2. jack.doc a program for comparing similarities using a jacknife procedure. source code jack.cpp.
  3. paste.doc a program to combine datasets. Source code.
  4. ManD (Mom and Dad) a program to enumerate possible parent-offspring relationships based on VNTR data in the GELSTATS format. Source code mand.cpp.

OnEx

is a system for putting math assignments (homeworks, quizzes, etc) online so that students can use the material over the WWW. The system includes automatic quiz generation based on templates, automatic grading of assignments, and platform-independent interfaces for faculty to use in creating and installing materials.

We began using the system in spring 1996. The system is also now used to deliver the university-wide mathematics placement test.
