SPRING 2020MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS
28-MATH2063
COURSE STRUCTURE AND GRADING
GOAL: In Multivariable Calculus we complete the Calculus sequence. We begin with the study of vector functions, space curves, equations of lines and planes, derivatives and integrals of vector functions and then move on to examine functions of many variables, their limits, continuity, partial differentiation, double and triple integration and vector calculus, in particular line, surface and volume integrals. We end with the beautiful theorems relating them, viz., the theorems of Green, Stokes and Gauss. Students are expected to acquire and apply skills in critical reasoning as well as to learn to organize their thoughts and to express them clearly in the language of mathematics. Problem solving is a fundamental part of this program and essential to satisfactorily achieving this goal.
Familiarity and proficiency with the concepts introduced in the prior courses (Calc I and II) will be assumed.
EXAMS: This course will have three 1 hour exams scheduled during the quarter and one 2 hour final exam given during the finals' week. In addition, three take-home Quizzes will be given during the quarter. The 1 hour exams will be given in class during the lecture period, on Mondays, February 10, March 09 and April 06. The final exam will be held on the date and time prescribed by the Registrar. The quizzes and exams will consist of problems similar to the suggested homework problems, examples from the text and problems and questions discussed in class. Students may use review notes (a "cheat-sheet") consisting of one 8.5" by 11" sheet of paper (letter-size) written on one side only during examinations.
HOMEWORK PROBLEMS:
Homework problems are assigned (see suggested problems). Working problems is a fundamental
part of this program and is essential to understanding the material covered.
Problems from two or three sections are assigned each week. You are expected to
hand in 10 problems per section each week (therefore, if two sections are
assigned for that week, 20 problems are to be submitted; if 3 sections are
assigned then 30 problems should be submitted). These problems can be chosen by
you from among the assigned problems (see
suggested problems), but they should be equally
distributed through the material covered in each section for that week.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
The
homework problems will not be graded, but they are indicative of the
problems that will appear on the exams. A sum total of 120 points is
assigned to the homework. You begin the quarter with all the points already
given to you. You are required to submit the assigned homework each week on
Friday. The homework will be returned to you the next week. For
homework that you do not submit each week, 10 points will be deducted
from the 120 points you started the quarter with.
Note:
1. Late homework will not be accepted.
2. When possible, answers
should be checked against the answers at the back of the text
before submission.
3. Loose sheets of homework problems will not be accepted. All submitted
homework must be stapled. Each section must begin on a separate page.
ATTENDANCE: Students are expected to attend all classes and be punctual. All absences must be excused.
CONDUCT: Students are expected to follow the Student Code of Conduct. Academic misconduct in this course will be dealt with in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
ABSENCES: Except for emergencies, students are expected to inform their instructor prior to the start of the exam if they cannot attend. Makeup exams may be arranged at the discretion of the instructor and only if the student has a valid and acceptable excuse for the absence (medical note, court order, etc.) with a suitable means of verification.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: The University of
Cincinnati Blue Ash College is committed to providing all students equal access
to learning opportunities. Disability Services is the official campus office
that works with students who have disabilities to arrange reasonable
accommodations. Students who have or think they have a disability are invited
to contact Disability Services for a confidential discussion. It is recommended
that students initiate contact early in the quarter to allow adequate time for
services to be arranged.
Location - Muntz Hall, room 112E.

MATHLAB: Excellent instructors are available to help
students with difficulties in physics and mathematics at the MATHLAB. Regular
use of these facilities is very highly recommended.

WITHDRAWAL: The last day to withdraw with no entry to your academic record and a full refund is Tuesday, January 26. The last day to withdraw with a "W" on your record is Friday, March 18. See the academic dates and deadlines calendar here.
GRADING: The course grades will be determined using the following
weights:
| Three 1 hour exams | 50 points each = | 150 points |
| Three take-home Quizzes | 50 points each = | 150 points |
| Homeworks | 120 points | |
| Final Exam: | 100 points | |
| Total: | 520 points (100%) |
Letter grades for the courses will be assigned using the following approximate guidelines:
| [90% , 100%] | A |
| [ 80% , 90%) | B |
| [ 70% , 80%) | C |
| [60% , 70%) | D |
| [0% , 60%) | F |
