7APPLIED CALCULUS I
28-MATH 1044
SUMMER 201
COURSE STRUCTURE AND GRADING
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Familiarity and proficiency with the concepts introduced in either of the preparatory courses "College Algebra" or "Pre-Calculus" will be assumed. After a brief revision of some algebraic concepts (functions and simple applications), we will study the derivative function and differentiation techniques with a strong emphasis on "real world" applications. The course will end with a brief review of Trigonometry. Students are expected to acquire and apply skills in critical reasoning and problem solving, as well as to learn to organize their thoughts and to express them clearly in the language of mathematics.
EXAMS: This course will have one 1 hour midterm exam and one 2 hour final exam given during the final week of classes. In addition, two take-home quizzes will be given between exams during the quarter. The midterm exam will be given in class during the lecture period, on Tuesday, May 30. The final exam will be comprehensive and will be given in class during the lecture period, on Tuesday, June 20. The quizzes and exams will consist of problems similar to suggested homework problems, examples from the text and problems and questions discussed in class. Students may use a "cheat-sheet" consisting of a single 8.5" by 11" sheet of paper (letter-size) written on one side only during examinations.
HOMEWORK PROBLEMS: Suggested homework problems are assigned (see suggested problem listing) and are due twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Working problems is a fundamental part of this program and is essential to understanding the material covered. Problems from two sections are assigned each period. You are expected to hand in at least 10 problems per section each period. These problems must be chosen by you from among the assigned problems (see suggested problem listing), but they should be equally distributed through the material covered in that section. Answers should be verified before submission. Homework Problems are due each Tuesday and Thursday by 5:30 pm.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The homework problems are indicative of the problems that will appear on the exams. A sum total of 120 points is assigned to the homework. You begin the quarter with all the points already given to you. You are required to submit the assigned homework each week on Tuesday and Thursday. The homework will be returned to you by the next lecture. For each homework that you do not submit, 10 points will be deducted from the 120 points you started the quarter with.
To be successful in this class you will need to spend approximately 8 to 10 hours per week beyond the lectures (outside of class) studying, reviewing the material and doing the homework.
Note:
1. Late Homework will not be accepted.
2. Loose sheets of homework problems will not be accepted. Please staple
your homework before submission.
ATTENDANCE: Students are expected to attend all classes and be punctual.
CONDUCT: Students are expected to follow the Student Code of Conduct. Academic misconduct in this course will be dealt with in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
ABSENCES: Except for emergencies, students are expected to inform their instructor prior to the start of the exam if they cannot attend. Makeup exams may be arranged at the discretion of the instructor. For this the student must have a valid, proven excuse for the absence.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: The University of
Cincinnati Blue Ash College is committed to providing all students equal access
to learning opportunities. Disability Services is the official campus office
that works with students who have disabilities to arrange reasonable
accommodations. Students who have or think they have a disability are invited
to contact Disability Services for a confidential discussion. It is recommended
that students initiate contact early in the quarter to allow adequate time for
services to be arranged.

MATHLAB: Excellent instructors are available to help
students with difficulties in physics and mathematics at the MATHLAB. Regular
use of these facilities is very highly recommended.

WITHDRAWAL: You may withdraw from the course until the final date set by the registrar: Friday, June 9, 2017.
GRADING: The course grades will be determined using the following
weights:
| One 1 hour exam in class | 100 points | |
| Two take-home Quizzes | 50 points each = | 100 points |
| Homeworks | 120 points | |
| Final Exam: | 200 points | |
| Total: | 520 points (100%) |
Letter grades for the courses will be assigned using the following approximate guidelines:
| [90% , 100%] | A |
| [ 80% , 90%) | B |
| [ 70% , 80%) | C |
| [60% , 70%) | D |
| [0% , 60%) | F |
