For Students Requesting Law, Graduate School and other References

I generally write references for senior law school applicants no later than the first week of January when admissions committees begin reviewing candidates for financial aid in the fall term. Please indicate if an earlier reference letter is needed.

The Law School Admission Service assembles reference letters to accompany other application materials, and U.C.’s office of Pre-Professional Advising will also maintain a reference file for law school applicants. Contact 6-2166, M.L. 7.

All students needing an admission, employment or other reference should assemble the following documentation and leave it in my mail box in 1100 Crosley Tower.

1. Any reference forms provided by the law or graduate school (fill out the portion to be completed by the student) and/or a list of addresses for those schools without special forms which require separate letters. If the school requires you to submit reference letters in sealed envelopes with your application, leave me a self addressed envelope where I should mail your reference(s).

2. A copy of your A&S degree audit check list (or transcript).

3. A copy of any required personal statement which you have written to accompany a law or graduate school application.

4. A copy of any personal resume used in employment or school applications giving work experience, education, etc.

5. LSAT or GRE score results if known.

You may include a cover letter to prod my failing memory about any significant interactions we have had that should have left a favorable impression of your work ethic, intellectual talent, academic preparation, communication skills, personal character, etc. If it has been awhile since we met in class and you have a paper that earned favorable review, please provide that writing sample to assist me in writing the best possible reference.

Good luck, and I always appreciate hearing later about your progress after U.C. graduation.
