CO-OP OPPORTUNITIES FOR
POLITCIAL SCIENCE AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
The Division of Professional Practice has Co-op positions for political science majors and pre-law students with the U.S. General Services Administration, law firms, and other employers. The U.C. Institute for Global Studies and Affairs has an International Coop Program with intensive language instruction in Spanish, German and Japanese and six month placements outside the U.S.
Majors who wish to be admitted to the program must formally agree to complete four co-op work assignments to qualify. The Director of Undergraduate Studies will certify as eligible those political science and international affairs majors with a 2.7 GPA who have completed at least 9 credit hours in the department by August 2001. For the special IGSA International Coop a 3.0 GPA is required. A first year student might complete all requirements for a B.A. degree with a Professional Practice Certificate in four years by careful planing of course schedules and co-op placements using summer sessions. Students who begin Co-op in their second year may take longer to complete the B.A. with a certificate.
The program is optional, but once admitted students accept an obligation to complete an additional A&S degree requirement beyond the 186 academic credits for the B.A.—satisfactory completion of at least four co-op assignments recognized with a Professional Practice Certificate at graduation.
Interested majors should register for a required one credit hour introductory course 36-PD-222 "Co-op for Bus Adm.” The first Co-op placement would be in fall, or possibly summer session. International Co-op students receive intensive language instruction in the summer before their junior year and then complete their final two placements the following Spring and Summer terms.
