  •

Select a site, obtain permission; determine process.

  • Check out camera (s) from the College Media Center (OCAS Library. You may need a letter from me).

  • Get other camera (s) from Media Services (Main Campus, Zimmer (556-1980).

  • Identify work to be studied, preferably cyclic and early in project.

  • Collect data from one full half day; may be parts of several days. Start preferably just before the crew start their operation. Observe their preparedness, coordination and identify their cloths color. Remember, you will be collecting data as you are videotaping.

  • Set cameras in two different points at least one elevated.

  • Synchronize time on cameras

  • Pan site with one or both cameras.

  • Focus cameras on work to be studied; then don't move them unless something unusual happens. NOTE: An alternative is to hold one camera on target and move the other occasionally.

  • After cameras are set do activity ratings use forms similar to the one suggested in the book. Achieve at least 400 total observations of work at hand.

  • Achieve at least four hours of videotape on each camera.

Take copious notes on site:

Ø      Identify workers for later video viewing

Ø      Safety

Ø      Material handling

Ø      Storage layout

Ø      Ideas to improve process

Ø      Way to automate the process.

Ø      Equipment utilization

Ø      Mobility on site

Ø      Shoot Digital Photos, you will need them during the final presentation.

Return to studio; set up dual monitors.

Ø      Compute Labor Utilization Factor

Ø      Perform crew balance.

Ø      Draw flow charts.

Ø      Prepare report on Productivity Improvement: What was the productivity before improvement,

Ø      What are the quantitative and qualitative results of your improvements.

Ø      Safety improvement

Ø      Quality Control improvement

Ø      How do you propose implementing the productivity improvement program at the company level.

Draw Crew Balance Charts

Analyze existing charts and diagrams.

Then, estimate the existing productivity: S.F/Hour, or C.Y./Hour, etc.

Next, Examine Several Solutions to the problems or to improve productivity and use modified charts and diagrams. Estimate what is the resulting improved productivity  S.F./Hr. Show Calculations.

Include Innovative techniques and technology as a separate or included solution.
