Exercise #07
Purpose
Discussion
We used ArcScene this week to produce a scene in which we draped the geologic quadrangle (GQ) for Glenwood Springs, Colorado over the 10m spaced DEM for the same area. In this exercise you'll be doing the same thing for two contiguous 7.5' quadrangles, Durango East and Durango West. GQ are the primary vehicle for reporting geologic mapping having replaced the old USGS folio series more than 30 years ago. GQ's are now being released as shapefiles. The advantages of this format are obvious, they be mosaiced, cropped, and edited.
We will be using the same two GQ used this week for the "final project" to be assigned next week in which you will produce a mosaic of the two GQ's in the format used by the USGS.
Deliverable
Download the Durango East and West GQs from the Colorado Geological Survey. Make sure you also download the pdf document with the description of the units. Unfortunately these maps do not include a legend file so you're going to have to make it up yourself. Make sure to use the appropriate colors. I strongly urge you to use the picture patterning demonstrated in class to make a background for the lithologic unity. You may want to look at a couple of "hard copy" GQs in the library to get an idea of what patter to use. Download the 10m spacing DEM's for the same quads from Geocommunity (note: the quadrangles are in La Plata County). As discussed in class, you must not have boundary lines corresponding the common edges of the mosaiced units.
