Exercise #02

Purpose

Make a useable (and useful) surficial geology map of Ohio using the SAMP dataset and ArcMap.

Discussion

We have already looked at the Surface Aquifer Mapping Project (SAMP) dataset for Ohio and have made an aquifer yield map.  I'd like you to make a surface materials map from the same dataset using the "SETTINGS" column of the attribute table (see "Unconsol Legends" for explanation of each unit).  Geologic symbology is not arbitrary and is explicitly laid out by the USGS in conjunction with an international commission.  Take a careful look at their guidelines.

Deliverable

Produce surficial depositional setting map of Ohio using the SAMP dataset and "SETTINGS" attribute.  Use the color and pattern conventions discussed in the Geologic Map Symbolization website given above and used in the other surficial geology maps posted around the department.  Include a legend using the procedure demonstrated in class.  Export the file as and *.emf, import it into a Word document, cut and past the description of the settings from the documents provided with the dataset
