Tell me about Java, Part II
 

• Java is a secure language.  There have been occasional breaches, but Sun is quick to fix the holes.  Java is far more secure than many competing languages.
• Remember  30-IT-252 ?  Perl is an excellent way to learn how the CGI protocol works.  Probably one of the best.  But you can now use Java to do what you did in Perl.  One asterisk, though, Perl is widely available on many  Internet Service Providers that do not (yet) support Java.  Why?
• Java makes n-tier programming easier than it has been with older, less portable solutions.  Technologies such as  Remote Method Invocation significantly minimize the effort required for network programming for old java hacks.
• JavaBeans (client) and Enterprise Java Beans (server) are cross-platform components that make re-use of code simple.  Some firms specialize in making and selling components.
• Imagine what happens when you take the cost and effort required in making a component and divide it by a large number of users!
• Java brings computing power to the Internet appliance.
• Though these appliances have yet to really take off, we see the same thing in WebTV, Palm - based computers, and more.
