• Java started life as Oak.  Oak was originally designed as a language to be used for smart appliances.  It was named after a tree outside of James Gosling's office.
• Since then...
• 1996: JDK 1.02 - The introduction of the Advanced Windowing Toolkit, later replaced by Swing.
• 1997: JDK 1.1
• 1998: JDK 1.2 (Also called Java 2, introduced Swing)
• 2000: JDK 1.3 (Also called SDK)
• 2001: SDK 1.4
