One of my latest published articles is an album review of OneRepublic's album Oh My My:
After two very long years, OneRepublic finally released their new album. My jaw dropped when I saw they released their first single: Wherever I Go. The song gave a very different sound that made me stop and ask, “Is this really OneRepublic?” Its upbeat chorus combined with a heavy dependency on keyboards made this song a hit, although it remained very underrated. Ryan Tedder, the lead singer for the band, said that this song was the hardest to write and took the longest to make.
The next single that was released on the album was Kids. It gives a nostalgic and striking feel with its staccato vocals and guitar. The following single was a promotional single titled Future Looks Good. It is incredibly catchy and reminds me of the classic OneRepublic sound. The final single was A.I. featuring guest artist Peter Gabriel. I have mixed feelings about the song in that it is catchy with great instrumental breaks but I believe it is too long. There is a point in the song where you think the song is finished but then it starts up again with Peter Gabriel singing which I find very odd.
The opening number for the album is Let’s Hurt Tonight, a catchy song that starts with a simple acoustic sound and then builds to this big and full sound. The title song for the album, Oh My My, featured guest artist Cassius. The song had a unique beat with a more electronic sound. Dream also had this electronic sound but with a bass driven beat that was very interesting and different to hear from the band. The sixth number on the album, Choke, is a strong power ballad. It starts out simple with Tedder’s vocals and a piano only. When it gets to the chorus, a choir comes and to provide a gospel feel that is simply striking. It could very well be OneRepublic’s next big hit.
Better also takes a different direction. It is more alternative in a way that is similar to Twenty One Pilots. Tedder sings with rhythms that are quick and grab your attention. Born is similar in style with the alternative sound but also keeps elements of the pop sound. Fingertips is very raw in that all we really hear in the song is a guitar and Tedder’s vocals. This puts a focus on his lyrics so that we can hear the story the song is telling.
Human contrasts this is in that there is a bigger focus on the beats than the vocals. Lift Me Up is similar in that there are many instruments being used putting a focus on the beat. Both songs are repetitive and catchy. NbHD was the last collaboration on the album, featuring Santigold. NbHD, standing for neighborhood, is once again a catchy song with strong beats.
All Theses Things has an interesting sound in that it uses the voice to create a beat that lays under the entire sound. However, the song sounds like the old, classic OneRepublic sound we’ve heard on previous albums. Heaven, the final song on the album, is an upbeat anthem that leaves the album on a positive note.
Target’s version of the album comes with four bonus tracks: Colors, The Less I Know, Heaven (Acoustic Version), and Better (String Version). Colors is a ballad that focus on Tedder’s voice and his lyrics. The Less I Know gives another unique sound in that it has a country, Mumford and Sons type of feel. It’s definitely worth the listen. The acoustic version of Heaven isn’t too much different from the original, but it gives a much more raw experience with the sound. The strings version of Better is much different from the original and once again gives a unique sound.
Oh My My is without a doubt one of the most diverse albums OneRepublic has released, ranging from their traditional pop to an electronic vibe. Some may say they dislike the album because there isn’t an ongoing sound that ties the album together. However, I think this goes to show just how talented the band is. They can do a wide range of things extremely well.
