Your final Course Grade will be based on a (two part) uniform comprehensive final exam, two in class hour exams, a gateway exam, weekly quizzes and classroom activities. Here is the precise breakdown:

A common final exam is being scheduled; I'll tell you the date as soon as I know it, but for now don't buy any airline tickets. The in-class hour exams are (tentatively) scheduled for Thursday 16 October and Thursday 20 November. In addition, there will be eight quizzes, each on a Thursday (except for the first week). Your two lowest quiz scores will be dropped. Classroom activities include attendance and participation. There will be NO make-up quizzes or exams; if you have a valid reason for missing one of these, please contact me before the quiz or exam.

There will also be a gateway exam which tests basic differentiation skills (essentially using the formulas from chapter 3).

Exam and quiz solution keys will be put on reserve in the Mathematics Library (840 Old Chemistry) which is directly across from the main office. This information will also be available electronically, somehow!

Homework will be assigned daily, but not collected. I encourage you to talk to other members of the class or to ask me or Laura for help.

If you are seeking help, there are Graduate Student Teaching Assistants on duty at the Math Tutor Lab in 803 Old Chemistry Monday through Friday from 9AM to 3PM (or so). Any of them should be able to help you. You can also see me directly after class, during my office hours, or by making an appointment. In addition it is possible to hire a private tutor; the main office has a list available and I will happily help you find someone. Perhaps the best way to get help is to ask your fellow classmates!

It is a excellent idea to go over your notes as soon as possible after class. You may want to get two notebooks for this course: use one to write down class notes and problems which I work in class; do your homework problems in the other notebook. I think you will find it easier to study for exams if your class notes are not cluttered with your homework problems.

Calculators will NOT be allowed on the common final exam, so you may not use calculators in this class. In addition, the uniform exam will be multiple choice, so expect quiz and exam problems where no partial credit is awarded.

The last day to withdraw from this class is Thursday 20 November. This is an official UC policy and something I cannot change.

GOOD LUCK
