About Model APEC

A Model Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference (APEC) is an innovative role-play simulation intended to provide students an opportunity to learn about global economic issues, different governments and cultures, and the work of international fora. In addition, students develop valuable and necessary skills in communication and collaborative group work.

The most significant difference between Model APEC and other simulations of international organizations like Model UN is that Model APEC simulates cooperative negotiation as opposed to decision-making in situations of conflict or crisis. APEC makes its decisions based on consensus rather than one country, one vote. Accordingly, in the Model APEC, issue committees will attempt to conclude the simulation having agreed to resolutions that have unanimous agreement. If unanimous agreement is not possible, a statement of what occurred in committee meetings and the reasons why consensus was not reached will be prepared.

The role-playing of the APEC Summit will follow from weeks of individual and collective research efforts both in and outside of the classroom. During the Summit, students will exercise public speaking, research proficiency, critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they strive to build consensus through rational compromise.
