Designer Genes: What Makes Each of Us Unique

Background: Students learn about DNA, genes, and chromosomes. They will get to see actual karyotypes showing whole human chromosomes, genetic maps, and examples of DNA test results.
Activity: Students will analyze the ``genetic makeup'' of special ``DNA cookie critters'', load electrophoresis gels with ``DNA samples'' and ``solve'' a genetic mystery by analyzing a karyotype or DNA fingerprint in small groups.
