The emission lines were created in the source, at the proper wavelength
(in the ultraviolet), but the source was traveling SO FAST away, the lines
were REDSHIFTED to the optical. Recall the Doppler Effect? Recall Hubble's
Law? This suggested these sources were EXTREMELY far away.
In 1963, a very special class Active Galactic Objects was discovered:
Quasars (Quasi-stellar-objects). They were stellar points,
and yet spectra revealed very strange, UN-identifiable emission lines.
Martin Schmidt realized they were emission lines that belonged
in the ULTRAVIOLET!
