We are used to seeing the Milky Way in the optical. The band of light
is due to stars, with large blotches of dark, due to dust in the interstellar
medium.
A near-infrared image shows the distribution of cool stars and hot dust.
This image
highlights the Bulge of our Galaxy because..?
At far-infrared wavelengths, all we see is cold dust which is VERY closely concentrated to
the plane of the galaxy. It makes up a very flat
distribution in the picture.
The radio reveals emission from Supernova Remnants!! And very local
ones, took, which appear to fill our entire sky. The "Northern Spur"
is seen in both Radio AND X-ray.
Structures seen in the radio are similar to those seen in the
X-ray they come from Supernova remnants, which
have both radio and X-ray emission.
