In the 1920s, a Yugoslavian scientist Milutin Milankovitch presented an `astronomical theory' for long term global changes in climate which result from slow changes in the Earth's orbit around the Sun. The Earth-Sun distance changes due to changes in: (1) the orbits `squashed-ness', (2) the amount of the tilt (varying from 22o to 24o), and finally, (3) precession. Imagine how things will change due only to precession in 12,000 years. Our Winters will be much colder and our Summers unbearably hot!
