How Photosynthesis Works

Plants make their own food using light and a process called photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is accomplished using a substance called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a pigment that absorbs the light from the sun, but chlorophyll is not the only pigment that is contained within the leaf of a plant. This experiment will examine the various pigments that are responsible for photosynthesis contained within a leaf. Leaves will be ground in a mortar and pestle using rubbing alcohol and sand. Leaf extract will be streaked onto filter paper and placed within a closed container of nail polish remover for 15 minutes. Different pigments will separate into bands on the filter paper. I have prepared a worksheet and presentation for the 15 minute waiting period. The Powerpoint presentation will focus on how light is absorbed by the various pigments and how these pigments are used in photosynthesis.
