Who we are

ELISA

For the ELISA, we used the Carolina Biologicals AIDS Simutest kit, catalog number 70-0472 and relabelled positive and negative samples based upon students' design. Any available ELISA protocol can be used.

For this experiment, the students were given a great deal of freedom in designing the experiment. They were asked to indicate both what samples to coat the wells with and what antibodies to use for detection. We used this opportunity to remind them about appropriate experimental design, including proper controls. Since this was the final experiment, for most groupsit served only as final confirmation of the causative agent of the outbreak. This served an additional purpose as a culminating activity to draw on their understanding of experimentation and experimental design, basic immunological principles and basic ideas about infectious disease investigations.
