introduction to the philosophical foundations of the teams
movement and needed skills to create organizational designs necessary for implementation
of self-directed teams.
1. Clarify the concept of
self-directed work teams and the difference from traditional management
structure.
2. Discuss typical team
problems and possible solutions.
3. Understand the roles and
functions of team members.
4. Discuss how teams are
managed in a problem solving continuous improvement environment.
5. Develop a practicing
knowledge of the group facilitator role and associated skills.
6. Practice working as a team.
7. Think and act cooperatively
as a team unit rather than individually, as a group of competitors.
8. Evaluate team interactions
with the goal of continuous improvement.
Course
Requirements
Attendance/Reading
Assignments: Due to the group nature of the course
attendance is critical. The student is
expected to read all assignments prior to the class in which they will be
discussed. He/she should be ready to
participate in class discussions and activities.
Quizzes: There will be a total of six (6) quizzes
during the quarter. There will be two
(2) quizzes on the material in the instructor provided handout and four (4)
quizzes based on the textbook. Quiz
formats will be true-false matching, short answer, and multiple choice. The quiz
schedule will be determined by the progress of the class. More detailed information regarding the
quizzes will be provided during the term.
Group
Project: Groups must prodce a tangible product for
which they will entirely design the production process. The project is worth 150 points. One Hundred and Twenty points will be
assigned by the instuctor based on participation, team processes, and quality
of production design. Thirty additional
points will be based on ratings by other group members.

final grade will be determined as follows:

COURSE POLICIES
Attendance
is a requirement of the course. If for
some reason you cannot attend a class, please let me know by using one of the
phone numbers (or other means) listed above.
Any assignments are due at the beginning of the
class period as indicated on the Course Schedule. Late assignments will be reduced at least one letter grade per class day at
the discretion of the instructor.
Assignments will not be
accepted one week after the due date has passed.
Consider this
class to be a call-free, beep-free, vibrate mode-free zone of silence.
Make-up
exams will be given at the discretion of the instructor. The student must notify the instructor of the absence before the exam begins. If
proper notification is given, a make-up exam will be administered which may be
significantly more challenging than the examination given on the scheduled
date.
