An
introduction to the philosophical foundations of quality management and the
organizational structure and design necessary for implementation.
1. Define the concept of Total
Quality Management (TQM).
2. Discuss the differences
between TQM and traditional management theories.
3. Understand the implications
TQM has on the organization, its culture, its employees, and its customers.
4. Examine the leadership role
in a TQM environment.
5. Outline the new operational
hierarchy in a TQM organization and the roles that support such a structure.
6. Relate the concepts of
ethics, empowerment, decision making and continuous improvement to a TQM
implementation.
7. Explain benchmarking,
Quality Function Deployment, Just-In-Time Manufacturing, and Concurrent
Engineering, and how they relate to the goals of Total Quality Management.
Quizzes: There will be a total of eight (8) quizzes
during the quarter. There will be five
(5) quizzes on the material in the instructor provided packet and three (3)
quizzes based on the readings. The
lowest packet quiz score will be dropped.
Quiz formats will be true-false and multiple choice. The quiz schedule will be determined by the
progress of the class. More detailed
information regarding the quizzes will be provided during the term.
Grading:
The
final grade will be determined as follows:
Packet
quizzes 4 @ 25 points each

Total Points 160 points
The
numerical average will be calculated by dividing total points by 1.6
Attendance
is a requirement of the course. If for some
reason you cannot attend a class, please let me know by using one of the phone
numbers (or other means) listed above.
Any assignments are due at the beginning of the
class period as indicated on the Course Schedule. Late assignments will be reduced at least one letter grade per class day at
the discretion of the instructor.
Assignments will not be
accepted one week after the due date has passed.
Consider this class
to be a call-free, beep-free, vibrate mode-free zone of silence.
Make-up
exams will be given at the discretion of the instructor. The student must notify the instructor of the absence before the exam begins. If
proper notification is given, a make-up exam will be administered which may be
significantly more challenging than the examination given on the scheduled
date.
