and Quality Management, Germain,
An examination
of the major health and safety issues that challenge contemporary
organizations. Topics highlighted are
OSHA, worker safety, workplace violence, alcoholism, AIDS, drugs, and stress
management.
1. Develop an understanding of
the issues involved in S-H-E-Q Management.
2. Develop an understanding of
the major considerations in safety program development and management.
3. Have an understanding of the
regulations that govern health and safety issues in the workplace.
4. Gain an understanding of
risk management techniques.
5. Learn how to keep proper
records of health and safety matters.
6. Be knowledgeable of incident
prevention and cost control techniques.
7. Be able to develop an
emergency preparedness plan.
8. Be able to complete a site
inspection and evaluation report.
Exams: There will be two (2) exams during the
quarter. Exam formats will be
true-false, fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, and essay. Exams will be given as indicted on the Course
Schedule.
Inspection
Reports: Students
will be assigned to a group. Each group will prepare a detailed inspection
report on the sites visited during the field trips. A detailed handout will be provided during
the quarter that explains the requirements of this assignment.
1) Research and obtain an
article from any business periodical (The Wall Street Journal, Business Week,
Medical Economics, Fortune, Inc. Magazine, Entrepreneur, etc.)
2) A 3x5 or 4x6 card must be
used
3) Attach the article or a copy
of it to one side of the card
4) Highlight or underline
topics discussed in the article which we have reviewed in class
5) Write or type your opinion
of the issue on the other side of the card.
Why is the issue important? What
other issues need to be considered?
Quarter
Paper: The student will prepare a 3 – 5 page paper,
which focuses on a specific topic of interest to the student relating to health
and safety management. The paper must be
typed, double-spaced with a 1-inch margin around each page. The paper should be e-mailed to the
instructor as a file attachment. The
topic must be approved by the instructor.
Example topics include: Regulatory
Compliance, OSHA, Emergency Planning, etc.
Grading:
The
final grade will be determined as follows:
Mid-Term Exam (Chapters 1 - 3, 5 – 8) 100
Points
Final Exam (Chapters 9,
11 – 14) 100 Points
Inspection Reports (2 @ 50 Points Each) 100 Points
Issue Summaries (2 Summaries @ 25 Points Each)

numerical average will be calculated by dividing total points by 5
Attendance
is a requirement of the course. If for
some reason you cannot attend a class, please let me know by using one of the
phone numbers (or other means) listed above.
Any assignments are due at the beginning of the
class period as indicated on the Course Schedule. Late assignments will be reduced at least one letter grade per class day at
the discretion of the instructor.
Assignments will not be
accepted one week after the due date has passed.
Consider this
class to be a call-free, beep-free, vibrate mode-free zone of silence.
Make-up
exams will be given at the discretion of the instructor. The student must notify the instructor of the absence before the exam begins. If
proper notification is given, a make-up exam will be administered which may be
significantly more challenging than the examination given on the scheduled
date.
