TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

As an assistant professor, I believe that teaching is of utmost importance.  It is for this reason that I take great pride in the courses that I teach.  Within health promotion, my specific aim is to assist undergraduate and graduate students develop the skills necessary to successfully perform as a community health educator.  The profession of health promotion is largely skills-oriented and therefore, I place much effort in building the necessary health promoting skills.

I have a high regard for my students and firmly recognize the importance of my position as a teacher to these individuals.  I approach each class in a professional but warm manner.  Responsible preparation, knowledge, and enthusiasm are a must.  I try to bring all every day I teach.  I truly enjoy teaching and feel extremely confident in my teaching abilities and the resultant positive student outcomes.  I attempt to create a positive environment and provide ample opportunities for students to learn.  My student evaluations consistently reflect quality teaching and concern for students.  Over the past 3 years, I have continued to receive excellent ratings from students regarding all aspects of my teaching.

I take these student evaluations very seriously.  After each quarter, I review the quantitative data for the evaluations and read the student comments.  Based on such information, I continually revise and upgrade the courses to best facilitate quality student learning.  In addition, I maintain an open-door policy with my students and encourage students to bring question, comments, or concerns.  In this manner, I believe that I am not only helping to educate students within the classroom but also helping to mentor them as they progress through the program.
