Exobiology (or Astrobiology)
Modern biological studies on Earth find (simple) life existing in what was once thought to be too extreme of conditions. This suggests life can be highly flexible and adaptable, giving scientists much to think about. Exobiology has become a major new direction of valid scientific research. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
An alien artifact is found on the moon. An expedition tracking
a radio signal leads a team of scientists (and the famous computer,
Hal) to Jupiter. Later, in the sequal
2010 (1984), Jupiter collapses,
turning it into a weak star, so as to melt it's ice covered
moon, Europa, so life can develop there.
Fact: Europa is considered by many to be an important Solar System objects on which life may exist.
Contact (1997)
After years of searching, Dr. Ellie Arroway finds conclusive
radio proof of intelligent aliens, who send plans for a mysterious machine.
Fact: Radio observations, such as those shown in the movie, are exactly how we are currently searching for extraterrestrial intelligence. This movie was based on a book written by astrophysicist, Carl Sagan. (some interesting Sagan quotes)
