Course Objectives:

The course provides an in-depth study of the internal workings of the IBM PC family of computers. The students will acquire an understanding of the machine cycles, operating system, memory addressing as well as the architect ure of the microprocessors. Problem solving techniques and critical thinking skills are emphasized.

Pre-requisite:

Introduction to Computer Programming I, II,III (or an equivalent sequence of high-level programming language); Problem Solving & Logic in Programming I, II or consent of the instructor.

Required Textbook:

Revolutionary Guide to Assembly Language by Maljugin, Izrailevich, Lavin and Sopin, WROX Press (1998 Reprint)

Chapters Covered:

Chapters 1 through 5, Appendix A through E, and Instructor supplied material

Topics Included:

IBM PC family architecture

Hardware and DOS

Memory management

Binary, Hexadecimal number systems

Assembly directives and instructions

Addressing modes

Hardware and software interrupts

Looping and conditional statements

Integer arithmetic

Numeric conversion and libraries

Expected Works:

Assignments: approximately 8

Each assignment is 10-20 points. To get full credit for each assignment you must carefully follow all the instructions given and turn it in on time.

2. Test/quiz/exam

Midterm: Friday, October 29^th

If you have a valid reason you may make up the midterm within 24 hours either before or after the above scheduled date at the convenience of the instructor.

Quiz: Maximum 4, may be unannounced.

Quizzes are given at the beginning of a class period. No make up for any quizzes.

Final Exam: Thursday, December 9^th, 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM. No make-up.

Grading Policy:

Assignment 50%

Midterm 20%

Quiz 5%

Final Exam 25%

A 90% or above

B 80% or above

C 70% or above

D 60% or above

F below 60% or found cheating or copying

No incomplete grade will be given. The latest you may withdraw from the course is Thursday, Nov. 18^th by 3:00 PM.

Attendance: Required. 3 absences = F

Student's Responsibilities:

Plan 8-12 hours of studying time per week for this course including many hours spent exploring the PC.

Seek help from the instructor or the tutor when you don't understand. Don't wait, and be prepared to ask specific questions.

Keep up with the instructor.

Complete assigned readings before coming to class.

Start an assignment as soon as it is assigned. Do not procrastinate!

Although you are expected to do your own work, you may study together and help each other out. But if copying is involved, you will receive no credit for the assignment.

Form study groups to study together and support each other.

Always bring your book, disk(s), and notes to class and to the computer lab.

Be attentive in class and be ready to participate in class discussions.

Attend class ON TIME.

Be courteous to your classmates.

Be cooperative, polite and patient with your instructor and expect the same from her.

Be a good listener and always follow instructions.

Do not get frustrated. Take a break and seek help when you are stuck.

No children are allowed in the instructional labs.
